SE4 Roadmap Update
There's lots going on here at SE central, so we'd like to take a minute to share some exciting new features that we're working on for the upcoming release of SocialEngine 4.1, as well as some other announcements:
1. Membership billing: This is one of the most frequently requested features so we're glad to announce it will be offered as a free upgrade to all SE4 clients. Utilizing the existing "Member Levels" feature of your site, you'll now have the ability to bill members and provide them with access to premium content and functionality. This adds a whole new method of monetizing your social network and monetizing is key to a website's success. The billing is handled by 2checkout.com, an excellent payment processor which handles debit/credit payments from all parts of the world and even allows for Paypal payments.
2. Automatic package downloader: We're working on making SE upgrades simpler. With SE 4.0, we started by adding a new package manager that simplifies installing mods and plugins. Now, we've added an optional automatic package installer that will let you pull packages and most upgrades directly from our servers, drastically simplifying the process. Of course, you can still optionally use the old method of installing packages yourself if you prefer.
In other news, we're finishing up the SocialEngine 4.0.1 upgrade and should have it released in the next couple days. It includes a huge batch of bug fixes that we've been addressing in response to your feedback so keep an eye out for that. We know many of you are waiting on the SE3->SE4 upgrade script. We really appreciate your patience as we finish writing and testing it and hope to have it ready in about 2 weeks.
Lastly, we're working on a full Ning importer that will make migration from Ning to SE a breeze. This will work with the "full export" that Ning is now providing its members. It's currently in testing, so keep an eye out for that as well.
As you can see there's lots going on so stay tuned, we'll have many more announcements as SocialEngine 4 continues to grow.

@Rose Absolutely, we're focusing on getting the upgrader out as soon as possible. We just released 4.0.1 which includes a huge batch of bug fixes. That's been our main priority, next will be the upgrader.
Paul C. said on July 29, 2010 10:52 amGreat news concerning the Membership Billing. Could you give us a heads up on how it will handle membership packages. For instance: Plan A1 - monthly recurring - Level A privileges. Plan A2 - quarterly recurring - Level A privileges Plan B1 - monthly recurring - Level B privileges. Plan B2 - quarterly recurring - Level B privileges Thanks for the great work.
Rose M. said on July 29, 2010 03:38 amAbsolutely agree with @Julia @JB and @Paul M. we NEED to be able to upgrade SE3 to SE4 before thinking on new features please! Old clients...first, please! Thank you

Across the board.. URL's need to be improved.. SEO should be most important for any site. Looking at the demo I see very little done here.. Imperative task. Otherwise looking good aside from needing a LOT more widgets.
Andre L. said on July 28, 2010 06:17 amWhy not PayPal as a option? Please, thing about it!
Eldar G. said on July 28, 2010 05:47 amThanks Noam, it is great that you provide roadmap for SE4 so now we know what will be included in new updates. Carry on! :)
Nicholas S. said on July 28, 2010 02:30 amAwesome news Noam. Although, I don't think much people will use the membership module because there are many free options available. I like the package downloader a lot because people like me who aren't very technical so to speak, a very useful feature. It's nice to have all the files within reach inside admin panel. As for the Ning importer, it made me chuckle a bit because I know Webligo will steal Nings customers with ease and with that said, show Nings who's king!
Paul M. said on July 27, 2010 09:52 pmWhen will features like FAQ, newsletter mail out, option to ban email domains etc... Be added these are all in v3
Proches T. said on July 27, 2010 03:17 pmI have to tell you guys have been very helpful since I started using SE4. You have fixed some bugs and added some more features on my website. You have said that all fixes and features will be included in the next release which is great! Keep up the work guys!!

Please also add the use of authorize.net. It provides transparency, and for us that have a major merchant account we dont fuss with Paypal.. But also another suggestion for everyone else is to use Google Checkout
Beckie C. said on July 27, 2010 01:46 pmI think the new release/upgrade is more important than SE3>SE4 - SE4 is great, but there are a few things that need fixing... and I agree a previous comment that PayPal should be added too.... of course thanks for all the hard work and effort, you're doing an amazing job.

This all sounds great, but I would like to see the SE3 > SE4 migration script done before anything else.

Larry G. said on July 27, 2010 04:24 amThats great news I waiting for the upgrade so i can port my user over and go live with the new site. The membership billing will be a great addition to this already fantastic product. So i am eagerly awaiting the upgrades, be fast but always be sure
Martin B. said on July 27, 2010 04:09 amI like the membership billing, but please make it to allow paypal only also instead of just 2checkout. I am not interested at this time to pay a $49 fee to 2checkout.
Ermir T. said on July 27, 2010 02:23 amGreat news from SE team. And more to come.
Paul M. said on July 27, 2010 01:25 am2 weeks ago you promise se3 to se4 now its 2 weeks again? why not work on what people actually need to get there communities running which is an updater, not new features
Peer said on July 27, 2010 12:48 am
Hi, good news to have an integrated billing module!! Why did you choose 2checkout? Costs are 5.5% commission on each transaction plus a $0.45 USD charge per sale. Doesn't cost paypal, Google Checkout and Amazon FPS less? BR, Peer
Steve H. said on July 27, 2010 12:24 amThanks for posting this! It is good to know what you are working on so we as network owners know how to plan. I'm especially excited about the Ning importer as I am looking to move an 18,000 member Ning network to SE.
Smith said on July 26, 2010 09:48 pm
1. Membership billing: Why not add paypal as option so we can choose either to use 2checkout or paypal for billing.
David said on July 26, 2010 08:42 pmEXCELLENT I am so happy you decided to release 4.0.1 separate from the migration script so we can get the update sooner. I am very pleased with V4 and you guys are doing a great job. Thanks
