Ning Member Importer
This Ning Member Importer is for site administrators who run a Ning site and want to migrate to SocialEngine without losing their users. This member importer will allow you to import the CSV file that Ning's Member Profile Backup generates. For more information, please see this Ning Member Export article.
What does the importer copy?
Currently, the Ning importer copies all user accounts along with some user profile information. This includes name, email, gender, location, country, zip code (for USA-based sites), age, birthdate, and date joined.
What does the importer not copy?
Unfortunately the automated member export feature in Ning does not export any content aside from basic profile data. The member export feature in Ning is intended solely for the purpose of backing up your member profiles, and as such it only includes profile data. To export ALL of your site content, you will have to request a full site export and closure through their Account Termination and Export page.
How do I use it?
-
1Download and install a fresh copy of SocialEngine (version 3.18 or higher). The importer is designed to be run with a clean SocialEngine installation, meaning that any existing SocialEngine user information will interfere with the process.
-
2Download the importer package attached to this article. Unzip it and upload the contents of the importer/ folder to your SocialEngine root directory (the same directory that "home.php" is located).
-
3Point your browser to where you uploaded import.php. For example, if your site is www.example.com you will want to go to www.example.com/import.php.
-
4Follow the instructions that appear in your browser window.
-
5Go to the "User Levels" section of your admin panel and choose the privacy settings for each section of your Social Network. By default, most of your imported user data will be publicly visible and everyone will be able to comment on your content.
-
6Delete the uploaded import.php, import2.php and importcsv.php files from your SocialEngine root directory.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Ning export does not contain passwords. As such, our import script will automatically generate a new password for each member, and can optionally email it to them. If you choose not to email your members during the import process, your users can log in for the first time by using the "Forgot Password" feature.
